Ho‘olako Agriculture Consulting in Kahikinui Country
Ho‘olako has curated several successful farms on the island of Maui. Owner and Operator Sam Hambek has provided farming consultation to agriculture endeavors in every region of Maui. The work always begins with soil remediation, and from there, everything grows. One of the most notable success stories is that of Hoku Nui in Pi‘iholo, where Sam proudly worked as a Farm Specialist.
The demand on Maui to rebuild soils has inevitably involved animal husbandry. The benefits of working with animals have proven to be paired well with the need to produce good soil. As our islands give attention to the urgency of food security, Ho‘olako provides the advice and guidance that repositions frustrated beginning farmers to that of confident food producers.
Recent work on Kahikinui Hawaiian Homestead has elevated the ability of this drought-riddled region to remedy the hydrophobic soil. In addition, recent work in watershed restoration grant work has also provided some much-needed drought relief from the Bureau of Reclamation. The grant written by Hambek will serve the community with water delivery. Something that has never happened in 29 years of Kahikinui homestead living. His contributions continue to be critical to the safety and health of these rural country residents.
Ho‘olako offers a myriad of solutions for struggling homesteaders. Pig and chicken operations have provided an example from which fellow homesteaders have benefitted. The traditional practices of subsistence living are alive and well, and Ho‘olako has been generous in supporting and helping implement the possibilities.
As Ho‘olako continues to help Kahikinui in all things, owner-operator Sam Hambek also appears to grow hearts as quality of life improves for the Kuleana designation Hawaiian Homestead of Kahikinui.
