Midwives Assert Cultural and Natural Birthing Rights
with Sit-In at the Hawai‘i State Capitol to Decriminalize Traditional and Indigenous Hawaiian Midwifery
SiGN PETiTiON: Legal Protection for Traditional Cultural Midwifery in Hawai’i 2023 Legislative session
A law that protects traditional and Hawaiian indigenous midwifery practices from criminality and cultural erasure is set to expire on July 1.
The Hawaii HB955 Bill would allow traditional midwives to continue attending births and show respect to the Hawaiian cultural beliefs and practices surrounding traditional birthing.
Our Hawaii relatives need our support and help.
Why Hawaii HB955 is Important
If the bill is not passed, the traditional midwives of Hawaii will be criminalized on July 1, 2023.
Women will be told by the government after July 1st who can touch their body.
Women will lose access to culturally appropriate care.
Rural areas will no longer have access.

Maui midwife and Natural Birthing advocate Ki‘i Kaho‘ohanohano reflects at the Hawai‘i State Capitol on the decisions to draw the attention of law maker Maui Representative Kyle Yamashita for decriminalizing traditional and Indigenous Hawaiian midwifery. Kaho‘ohanohano was prepared to be arrested and when fellow advocates encouraged her to leave willingly under duress she exclaimed, “I’m just a Ku‘e Mama you know”. Her choice to not get arrested has catapulted her voice. She and other Natural Birthing advocates have multi-island events on Monday and are now demanding Representative Scott Saiki to schedule a hearing for House Bill 955.
