In an astonishing series of events, an East Maui farmer has been attacked by corporate third-party aggressors in attempts to continue stealing water and they are using guns to do it. Hawai‘i has been in 127 years of occupation and those corporations who advantaged the illegal overthrow are pulling triggers to hold on to stolen goods. This is unacceptable.
A farming family in the East Maui area of Wahinepee has been suffering and a documentary film crew has decidedly opted to follow the family’s misfortunes to help tell the story that in fact affects all of Hawai‘i and certainly the native tenants.
While comments are not afforded on the YouTube broadcast, you may make commentary and pose questions here. While extremely dramatic, so much has transpired since and filmmakers are on to the next. We appreciate all those who contributed to the film bits featured in this piece. Some wish not to be mentioned, some are warriors on worldly missions, some have contributed to bail funds, and some have stayed to capture what transpires with hopeful demeanor. What must be made clear here is that this is not vigilante takes on the issues spotlighted, law is the backbone. There is strong work being done daily on educating placeholder government bodies and their subsequent security officers on how to best interpret the law, abide by it, and exercise proper de-escalation methodologies. There is a wide collective agreement that transitioning can be done peacefully and with aloha. Those who assert themselves so fiercely merely lay path so others that follow need not have such violence afflicted upon them. To all of those kanaka (humans), on all islands throughout Hawai‘i, your work on correcting history is not in vain.
