Wolbachia Update #3
Mahalo to everyone for sending in your comments to the Maui Environmental Assessment for the State of Hawaii’s planned “Mosquito Control Research Using Wolbachia-based Incompatible Insect Technique” project. Our comments are being reviewed, and the state will be responding in the weeks ahead.
Comments on the Hawaii Department of Agriculture’s application to the EPA for Emergency Exemption are also under review. The HDOA’s exemption request proposes a new use of a microbial pesticide not registered by the EPA, bypassing the regulatory process. Over 95% of the total comments received are opposed to the use of this novel mosquito biopesticide. We’ll continue to monitor the application docket for updates on the EPA’s decision.
We’re proud to announce that Hawaii Unites has received our 501(c)(3) nonprofit determination from the IRS. We are now accepting tax-deductible donations to help fund our mission of honoring and protecting our sacred connection to the natural world. Hawaii Unites is currently focused on protecting Maui’s native birds, wildlife, public health, and the ‛āina from the State of Hawaii’s planned biopesticide mosquito experiment. We are asking that the state complete a detailed Environmental Impact Statement documenting the serious risks of this project. We will be initiating legal action, and we need your support.
